Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces or both (WHO definition). TYPES Type 1 diabetes It is characterized by deficient insulin production and requires daily administration of insulin. The cause of type 1 diabetes is not known and it is not preventable with current knowledge. Type 2 diabetes It results from the body’s ineffective use of insulin. Type 2 diabetes comprises 90% of people with diabetes around the world, and is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity. Gestational diabetes Gestational diabetes is hyperglycemia with blood glucose values above normal but below those diagnostic of diabetes, occurring during pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of complications during pregnancy and at delivery. They are also at increased risk of type 2 diabetes in the future. Gestational diabetes is diagnosed through prenatal screening, rather than reported symptoms. PREVALENCE OF DIABETES Over 371 million people worldwide have diabetes and approximately half of these are women. In 2014 the global prevalence of diabetes * was estimated to be 9% among adults aged 18+ years. A substantial 80% increase will be seen in middle to low income countries and the highest rise will be seen in Indian sub-continent. WHO reports that 55% of diabetes deaths occur in women.
